Serious Injury Claims & Catastrophic Accidents, Northern Ireland
If an injury has a catastrophic impact on the victim’s life, it’s considered to be a serious injury. This usually involved life-changing, extreme or long-lasting consequences. Traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, limb amputations, polytrauma and multiple injuries, and long-term psychological trauma are all examples of serious injuries.
If you’ve experienced these or other catastrophic injuries because of someone else’s actions, you’re eligible to make a serious injury claim in Northern Ireland. Claiming the compensation that’s rightfully yours will help you to deal with the financial and medical impact of your injuries.
Some common causes of serious injuries in Belfast and Northern Ireland include:
Serious Injuries on the Road – Being involved in a road traffic accident as a driver, passenger or vulnerable road user, such as a pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist.
Serious Injuries at Work – Being injured due to unsafe machinery, inadequate risk assessment, co-worker negligence or other dangerous working conditions.
Serious Injuries due to Medical Negligence – Injuries caused by surgical errors, misdiagnosis and undiagnosed illnesses.
Serious Injuries due to Criminal Assault – Traumatic injuries caused when somebody inflicted violence on you.

Step 5: Compensation Payout
We’ll continue to support you to ensure your compensation reaches you promptly.
Serious Injury Claim Time Limits
You usually have three years in which to make a serious injury claim in Northern Ireland. There are some exceptional circumstances in which the time limit can be extended:
- If you were under 18 when you sustained a serious injury, you can claim up to your 21st birthday.
- If you or the person you’re claiming on behalf of don’t have the mental capacity to make a claim, there are no time limits.
- If your injury or the negligence that caused only becomes known later, you can claim within three years of the date you became aware.
Serious Injury Compensation – What is My Claim Worth?
It’s important to claim the serious injury compensation you deserve. This is money that you’re entitled to and which can be used to help to alleviate any hardship you’re experiencing because of your injury.
The amount of serious injury compensation you get will depend on the seriousness of your injury and several other factors. Your payout will be split into two categories:
General Damages:
This is compensation for the direct impact of a serious injury. General damages include compensation for the pain you suffered at the time of your injury, any ongoing pain and suffering, and any impact on your quality of life.
Special Damages:
Special damages are awarded based on the financial impact of your serious injury. This could include loss of earnings, medical bills, rehabilitation costs and adjustments to your home or transport.
