Vibration White Finger Claims in Northern Ireland

Vibration White Finger (VWF), also known as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) or Raynaud’s Disease, is a debilitating condition resulting from prolonged use of vibrating tools. Affecting blood circulation to the fingers and hands, VWF causes numbness, pain and difficulty handling objects – which can severely impact daily activities as well as the ability to work.

As cases of Vibration White Finger continue to be reported under the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit scheme, it’s clear many industries still face these work-related health risks throughout the UK & NI.

For those suffering from Vibration White Finger, not only is it important to claim compensation for your own sense of justice, it’s also a key step in holding employers accountable for proper safety measures and prevention strategies. By making a White Finger Claim, you’ll recoup the losses your injuries have caused whilst also improving Northern Ireland’s working environments for the future.

Symptoms of Vibration White Finger

Symptoms of Vibration White Finger can start within a few months but usually develop over several years of using vibrating tools. They may appear sporadically, typically triggered by cold, and can worsen or become constant without proper management.

Vibration White Finger Symptoms Include:

  • Tingling and numbness in the fingers
  • Episodes of finger blanching (whiteness followed by redness)
  • Loss of sensation and manual dexterity
  • Fingers turning white or blue, especially in cold conditions
  • Pain and discomfort in the affected areas
  • Reduced grip strength

If exposure to vibration tools is continuous, vibration white finger can become permanent. It’s therefore vital for employers to enforce correct health and safety measures within industrial workplaces as a preventive measure.

Causes of Vibration White Finger

Vibration White Finger is particularly common in workplaces that frequently use vibrating equipment, especially within construction, manufacturing, and mining industries.

In Northern Ireland, Vibration White Finger is high among workers in industries like construction and manufacturing. According to data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), these sectors report a significant number of new assessments for VWF.

Working with the following industrial equipment could make you more at risk of developing Vibration White Finger:

  • Power drills
  • Jackhammers
  • Chainsaws
  • Grinders
  • Sanders
  • Impact wrenches
  • Concrete breakers
  • Pneumatic tools
  • Hand-held vibratory tools
  • Hedge trimmers

While any industrial workplace has a degree of risk, Vibration White Finger is a condition that can and should be prevented through effective workplace health and safety measures.

Employers have a duty of care to protect employees by implementing measures such as providing adequate training on the safe use of vibrating tools, supplying vibration-dampening equipment, and scheduling regular breaks to minimise exposure. Additionally, conducting risk assessments and implementing engineering controls are crucial for preventing the onset of VWF among workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can make a Vibration White Finger claim if you’re self-employed, but eligibility largely depends on your specific work arrangements.

If you operate as a contractor or subcontractor and another party is responsible for the health and safety conditions under which you work, you may have grounds to claim. In this case it would be crucial to prove that you did not control your working environment.

However if you’re fully self-employed and manage your own work settings, claiming might be more challenging due to your responsibility for your own safety. To check your eligibility, contact our team today.

To make a Vibration White Finger claim, you’ll need evidence such as medical reports diagnosing the condition, employment records linking your job to the exposure, and witness statements if available. Documentation of your work duties and equipment used, along with any relevant safety records, are also crucial. These help establish the connection between your workplace conditions and your health issues.
The duration of a Vibration White Finger claim can vary, typically ranging from several months to a few years. The timeline depends on factors such as the complexity of the case, the extent of medical evidence required, and whether the claim is settled out of court or proceeds to trial. Seeking legal representation from our specialist solicitors early can help streamline this process.
In Northern Ireland, ‘No Win, No Fee’ arrangements are not permitted – however we offer ethical alternatives to support your Vibration White Finger claim. These alternatives ensure you can pursue justice without upfront legal fees, reducing financial risk while seeking compensation. What a fantastic group of people to work with from start to finish. I thoroughly endorse this firm of solicitors to any former service personnel who have suffered hearing loss and/or tinnitus as a result of live firing in pipe ranges in Northern Ireland. These guys acted on my behalf following a simple hearing assessment and secured a sizeable settlement from the MoD for me. They did not take ANY of my compensation in payment, but claim a separate payment directly from the MoD for their work. David even declined an initial derisory offer from the MoD and secured a much better one which was 500% (yes 500%) above the original offer. If you or you know anyone who suffers the same problems, I would urge you to get in touch with David French or one of his colleagues at Reid Black solicitors. The only downside is the amount of time you have to wait for the MoD to play ball. On the plus side you’ll probably forget you’ve claimed at all and so it’s a great surprise when you finally get a result!read more

I am absolutely delighted at the result David French and the whole team at Reid Black managed to negotiate for my hearing loss claim. It was a long process, but none of that due to RB, rather the bureaucracy and feet dragging of the MoD. There was one small period of frustration on my part when I had not heard from them in a while, but it transpired that their communications with me via e-mail had gone into my spam box, that I don't regularly check, so this frustration was my fault completely. David received an initial settlement offer, but refused it and negotiated a 33% increase in the offer on my behalf. I thoroughly recommend this Business to any former service personnel that served in NI after 1987, that have suffered hearing injuries. Thank you Reid Black.read more

A Separation of a marriage is a really devasting and stressful time. My daughter used the services of Kathryn Aiken. Kathryn is such a lovely lady, with a real kindness and total understanding of the situation. She gave my daughter excellent legal advice and guided us safely through the whole process. Yes it did take time to finally come to an agreement on matters, but all throughout Kathryn was available to answer emails promptly or take a phone call. Nothing was ever a bother. That means a lot to have that total backing and support. We felt totally at ease meeting Kathryn at her office to sign documents and as upsetting as it sometimes was we were shown total empathy and comforted on occasions were needed. The quotation Kathryn gave me at the start of the process was near enough spot on at the end. I would not hesitate to recommend Kathryn to anyone in need of help. you are 100% in the best professional hands. I will be using Kathryn again in the future. Thank you for everything. Ref - Military hearing loss claim. I am speechless - having left the Army 32 years ago I never expected to qualify for any sort of payout. Getting in touch with Reid Black Solicitors was more a case of - 'try it and see, nothing ventured, nothing gained.' Absolutely dumbfounded by the amount you have recovered for me. I never expected any payout to be in the 5 figure bracket. We have a modest income and lead a modest lifestyle, but now, all our current financial challenges are over. A 'Thank you' seems totally inadequate, but we are truly grateful for your efforts and the result. Thank you. Kind Regards Alan Munceread more
