Construction Accident Claims, Northern Ireland
Building sites are high-risk environments in which to work or spend time. The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland says there is a “poor accident record” in the local construction industry. It points to 46 workers killed in accidents in the last 10 years.
Just because you work or visit places that are a hotbed of accidents doesn’t mean you should have to live with the damaging impact a construction site accident can have on your life. Claim the money you deserve for any pain or suffering you’re experiencing as a result of an incident on a building site.
Causes of Common Construction Accidents
A wide variety of workplace accidents happen on construction sites. They can happen to anyone on site, including builders, joiners, electricians, plumbers and visitors. Whatever the nature of the injury, it can usually be traced back to one of a handful of common causes of construction accidents. These include:
Risk Assessments Failures
An adequate risk assessment was not carried out or measures that should have been in place were not followed. As a result, you were exposed to unnecessary danger.
Exposure to Dangerous Substances
Property safety precautions were not put in place to protect you from one of the dangerous substances and chemicals often found on building sites. The impact may have been immediate or affected you later in life.
Lack of PPE
Your employer or a manufacturer supplied defective, inadequate or incorrect personal protection equipment (PPE). This caused or worsened the injury you suffered.
Inadequate Safety Training
You or another person was asked to carry out a task without having the necessary skills, knowledge or safety training. This lack of training resulted in an incident that caused your injury.
Inadequate Safety Measures at Heights
The building site didn’t have appropriate measures in place to protect you when working at heights, such as guard rails or harnesses. This often results in falls from scaffolding, roofs or ladders.
Electrical Failings and Faulty Equipment
Electrical safety on construction sites can be impacted by damaged cables, faulty equipment and even wet conditions. You may have suffered electric shocks or burns as a result.
Repetitive Work
You were required to carry out the same task for too long or use hand-held power tools for extended periods. This can cause a repetitive strain injury or, in the case of power tools, vibration white finger.
Poor Manual Handling Practices
Being expected to lift or carry heavy loads, items that were not stored at waist height, or something inappropriate to your size and strength may cause a manual handling injury.
Traffic Management Issues
Forklifts, vans or other site traffic was not properly managed or a driver was not competent to use a particular vehicle. This unsafe environment may have resulted in your injury.
Construction Accident Injury Claims
There are various injuries for which construction accident injury claims can be pursued. These include:
- Broken or fractured bones
- Cuts or lacerations
- Amputation
- Sight loss or damage
- Hearing loss or damage
- Crush injuries
- Burns
- Electrocution
- Head injuries
- Paralysis and spinal injuries
- Asbestosis, black lung, silicosis and other respiratory diseases
- RSI
- PTSD
- Heat stroke or hypothermia
- Vibration injuries
- Fatality
Construction Accident Claim Eligibility
If you’ve been injured in a construction site accident that was the result of negligence, you can claim to get the compensation you deserve. Your injury could be the fault of your employer, a construction company, site manager, contractor or equipment manufacturer.
You can also claim on behalf of a family member or friend who is under the age of 18 or unable to make a claim themselves for any reason.

Construction Accident Claim Time Limits
You usually have three years after a construction site accident in Northern Ireland to pursue your claim. There are some variations depending on your age and circumstances:
- If you were over 18 at the time of the accident, you must claim within three years
- If you were under 18 at the time of the accident, you must claim before your 21st birthday
These timeframes can be extended in exceptional circumstances. For example, if you were physically or mentally unfit to pursue a claim, the accident happened overseas, or a fault with the equipment you were using is only discovered outside that timeframe.
In all cases, it is better to contact us as soon as possible after a construction site accident so we can take action to help you quickly.
Construction Accident Compensation
The amount of money you receive will depend on how serious your injuries are, how long they last and how they impact your life. There are two main types of damages:
General Damages
Compensation for your physical and psychological injuries. You will be awarded damages according to the level of pain, suffering and impact on your quality of life.
Special Damages
Compensation for any out-of-pocket expenses you’ve paid because of your injuries. This might include healthcare and rehabilitation costs, travel expenses, lost earnings, and adjustments to your home.
