Eye Injury Claims, Northern Ireland
We’re sorry you’re in the position of needing to make an eye injury claim. From our work on similar claims, we fully understand the impact a serious eye injury has on your everyday life and the complication it brings to even the simplest of activities.
If the sight and vision you were once able to take for granted has been damaged or taken away completely due to someone else’s negligence, you have a right to make an eye injury claim. You’re entitled to compensation that helps you to deal with this sudden and devastating injury.
There are a wide variety of accidents that cause eye injuries and result in successful eye injury compensation claims in Northern Ireland. They include:
Road Traffic Accidents – Objects such as metal or glass can enter the eye and cause damage during a road traffic accident. The blunt force trauma of a collision might fracture the eye socket and injure the eye itself.
Accidents at Work – Objects can enter the eye and cause serious injury at work if goggles and face shields are inadequate or not provided, equipment is broken or poorly maintained, chemicals are stored dangerously or proper safety training is not provided.
Medical Negligence – Misdiagnosis, improper treatment, botched surgical procedures, inadequate post-surgery care and other forms of medical negligence — including during cataract or laser eye surgery — can result in eye injuries.
Accidents in Public Places – Visiting a restaurant, shop or other public place can result in eye injuries if hot food or drink scalds your eye, an object falls onto you or a foreign object gets into your eye because there were inadequate safety procedures in place.
Types of Eye Injuries
Eyes are so delicate that any damage caused by someone else’s negligence is likely to be eligible for compensation. Some of the most common eye injury compensation claims in Northern Ireland involve:
- Detached retina
- Scratches or damage to the cornea
- Chemical burns
- Radiation exposure
- Deteriorating eyesight due to previous injury or exposure
- Loss of an eye
- Full or partial blindness
Eye Injury Claim Eligibility
If you’ve suffered any of the eye injuries we’ve mentioned or another eye injury because of someone else’s negligence, you are entitled to claim compensation.
Claiming for Yourself – You can claim eye injury compensation for any eyesight damage or loss that was someone else’s fault.
Claiming on Behalf of Someone Else – You can claim eye injury compensation on behalf of a loved one who is unable to make their own claim.

That’s why we’ve created an eye injury claims process that helps you to get the compensation you’re entitled to without creating further disruption. Our experienced solicitors will take the lead and give you the support you need at every stage.

When you’re ready to start your claim, we’ll collect as much evidence as possible to support your claim. This might include medical notes, evidence from the scene and the accounts of any witnesses.
Step 3: Medical Assessment
Next, we’ll arrange for you to be examined by an independent medical professional. It’s important we understand the full extent of your injury and the likelihood of your eyesight deteriorating over time.
Step 4: Compensation Negotiations
With a full understanding of your eye injury, we can start negotiations with the at-fault party’s insurer to secure the maximum amount of compensation you deserve.
Step 5: Compensation Payout
We’ll continue to support you to make sure the compensation reaches your bank account promptly.
Eye Injury Claim Time Limits
You usually have three years from the time of suffering your injury in which to make an eye injury claim in Northern Ireland. There are a few exceptions to this:
- If you were under 18 at the time of the injury you can claim up to your 21st birthday
- If you or the person you’re claiming for is mentally incapacitated and unable to claim, there are no time limits.
- If you only found out your eye injury was caused by negligence later, you have three years from the date you became aware of the negligence in which to claim.
Eye Injury Compensation
If you’ve suffered a serious eye injury due to negligence, it’s important to claim the compensation that’s rightfully yours. Eye injury compensation can pay for any treatment you need, alleviate the impact the injury is having on your life and recover any financial losses caused by your eye injury.
We can help you to secure prompt interim payments before your claim is finalised to ensure you don’t have to endure any further hardship in the meantime.
The compensation you get will be split into general and special damages.
General Damages Compensation
This is compensation for the direct impact of your eye injury.
It includes compensation for the pain you experienced, any long-term suffering and the impact on your quality of life. If you’ve lost some independence, can no longer drive or enjoy work, hobbies or socialising in the way you used to, you’re entitled to be compensated for that.
For a minor eye injury in Northern Ireland, you could claim up to £23,500 in general damages, or up to £100,000 if there’s serious impairment in one eye. Whereas if you’ve suffered total blindness due to an eye injury, you could be awarded up to £600,000.
Please note these are only guidelines — the amount you receive will be specific to your circumstances.
Special Damages Compensation
You will also be entitled to special damages compensation. This is compensation for the financial impact of your eye injury. Special damages might include:
- Loss of Employment & Earnings – If you’re unable to work or can’t return to the same job because of your eye injury, you can claim for loss of earnings. If a loved one is unable to work because they are now your carer, you can also claim for their lost earnings.
- Loss of Employment & Earnings – If you’re unable to work or can’t return to the same job because of your eye injury, you can claim for loss of earnings. If a loved one is unable to work because they are now your carer, you can also claim for their lost earnings.
- Adaptations to Your Life – If you need to make changes to your home or any other part of your life in order to maintain your quality of life, you can claim compensation for this.
- Care Provisions – If you need extra care or support because of the impact of your eye injury, you’re entitled to special damages to cover the costs.
